nehemiahIn the Spirit of Nehemiah

by Aaron Elliott

This book is a fantastic overview of Nehemiah Vision Ministries as well as the situation in Haiti. Written from the perspective of a suburban family’s one-year commitment to live and work on NVM’s campus, it is full of real-life stories and delightful insight into Haitian life, culture, and the challenges of serving. It’s a great place to start if you want a new understanding and passion for this amazing ministry.

pathologiesPathologies of Power

by Paul Farmer

Written by a Harvard Medical Professor who spent many years in Haiti, this book is powerful. While it provides an in-depth look at Haiti’s history (and the West’s culpability in the country’s lack of development) it also speaks fervently to the broader picture of the marginalized and the fact that no one becomes oppressed without an oppressor. Yet it is not without hope. With the same unflinching drive that paints such a brutal picture of Haiti’s past, Paul Farmer takes a stance that the future can be different as well… if we all can change.

WhenHelpingHurtsWhen Helping Hurts

While World Next Door has recommended this book before, it is essential reading to understand the philosophy of NVM. In fact, it is on their recommended reading list as well. If you haven’t read it, do so. It’s a must-read for anyone who is interested in making a positive, sustainable impact on the world and teaching others to do the same.
