Worth the Effort
by Jeff Hartman
In the midst of our Himalayan Trek (you can read all about it in the “Explore” section), Brooke and I had the opportunity to see the sunrise from the world famous Poon Hill. After two days of hiking and thousands of steps climbed, we were not about to miss this opportunity.
I woke up at 4am and, to my dismay, heard rain falling on the tin roof of our teahouse. I went downstairs to talk to our guide, expecting him to tell us to get back in our sleeping bags. To my surprise, however, he said, “Let’s go for it!” I ran back upstairs, woke up my wife, and within 10 minutes we had our hiking boots on, our cameras packed, and we were on our way up the “hill”.
Half way up the mountain we were getting frustrated. We were cold, exhausted, and we didn’t even know if we’d get a sunrise. Nevertheless, our guide remained optimistic.
As I approached the summit, the skies started to lighten, and the clouds became thinner. I got out my camera and waited for Brooke and the sun to arrive. Just as Brooke summited, the clouds parted, and God started painting a masterpiece that I will never forget.
