Wow.  What else can I say?  I just returned from a four day journey into the wilderness of southern Israel.  Sun, camels, sand dunes… It was awesome!

A cliff in the desert. As barren and dry as the wilderness was, it really was quite beautiful!

I got to tag along with a “Desert Encounter” run by Musalaha, the organization I’m writing about while in the Holy Land.  They use the wilderness as a common ground in which to provide Palestinian and Israeli youth a chance to rub shoulders and begin the long process towards reconciliation.

I’ll be writing more about my experience in the desert over the next two articles, but I wanted to start off by giving you a glimpse into just what it looks like deep in the Negev.

Stay tuned for more stories from the wilderness!

Episode 10 Footnotes

  • In this video I’m wearing a Palestinian keffiyah, a traditional headscarf here.  I’m a sucker for useful gear, and wow.  It doesn’t get more useful than this. Protection from the sun, a flap to cover your mouth from dust, and at night it becomes a scarf to keep you warm.  Awesome!
  • We were hiking in the Negev, the vast desert wilderness that covers more than half of Israel’s landmass.  It’s a strikingly beautiful place!
  • If you’re into biblical history, we were in a region once belonging to the Edomites.  It was in that same desert that Moses drew water from the rock (Numbers 20).  Cool, huh?
  • More to come!  Stay tuned to World Next Door Uncut and we’ll see just where in the world we’ll end up next… :-)

This was great glimpse you’ve given us…the keffiyah looks awesome, the Negev is beautiful, and great job pronouncing all those words! Throwing in the Biblical history facts, which I am into… all I can say is, “Very cool.” God bless the rest of your time in the desert/wilderness.

    All the updates are great!

Were you at our extended family Christmas gathering and I just didn’t notice? I mean with all of the keffiyahs in the place it’s hard to tell.
    Way to sport the headgear!

Very cool (not really I guess as it is a desert)

..but how awesome it must be to be in an area so rich with history dating back nearly 4000 years BC. A region once conquered by King David, and many others. That region is mentioned often in 1 and 2nd Kings.

And there you are…keffiyah, sunglasses, camera, and two groups of young people sharing life, learning about one another, and enjoying Peace. So much conquest, war and blood shed on that ground for thousands of years, and then this…..a vision of God restoring the natural order of things.

    Cool…yeah, even in the desert. :) <3
